Of course, money is a major consideration whenever you go to college, and one of the largest expenses in college is the books that you will need for each semester. It’s very easy to spend between $300 and $400 every semester just on your books. So one tip on how to cut back on expenses is to buy used college textbooks online instead new ones at the college bookstore. You may be able to save $200 or more each semester by doing so. 2. Use a day-timer or calendar to help you keep your schedule straight when you’re planning your activities. You’ll need to keep track of your test dates, and project due dates, as well as scheduling out your homework for all the various classes you’re taking. Without some organization it will be easy to lose track and get unpleasantly surprised by a test date that you had forgotten. 3. Try to avoid all credit card debt that you possibly can while in college. This is where many college students ruin their credit ratings for many years to come. So just say no to credit for now, no matter how easy it is to get. 4. It should go without saying that the reason you are at college is to study, not to party. It may seem like you’re doing more reading than anything else, but if you don’t keep up with your reading you will have problems later on. Learn how to say no to your friends or others who want you to spend more time in certain endeavors then you should. “No” is not a bad word to learn. It’s always good to have fun, but just don’t let it get out of control. 10. Don’t forget to eat like you should if you want to get the best results from your college years. The better you eat and take care of yourself, including getting enough sleep at night, the better chance for success you will have in your studies. As a testament to the earths seemingly shrinking waistline, more and more young men and women are finding true love outside their faith and making it work. Yet no matter how progressive you and your families may be, the peaceful merging of two religions can prove an ambitious undertaking. Take a deep breath, remind yourself that love is the end goal, and get ready to celebrate a marriage made in heaven, er, make that two heavens. Interfaith wedding ceremonies pose a few planning challenges. Here is some advice to get you started: Do Some Soul Searching - If youve been neglecting your spiritual side, its time to get reacquainted. Assess your beliefs and the role you see them playing in your life. How important to you is it that your wedding ceremony reflects your religious background? How willing are you to compromise for your fiancs beliefs or family? Know your personal stance on faith and religion, so you can speak candidly with your fianc and your families and make decisions accordingly. Talk it Over - After youve come to terms with your own spirituality, you and your fianc need to have an honest discussion about religion. Although you should have broached the topic at some point during your relationship, now a wedding ceremony and marriage loom, adding a sense of urgency. During your internal reflection, you may have discovered your own views altering a bit, and he may feel the same. Get Counseled - Counseling sessions, often recommended before a wedding regardless of the couples religion, offer a good opportunity for a bride and groom to not only learn about the other’s faith, but also to consider ways to merge traditions or celebrations during the ceremony. Since religion wont disappear after your wedding day, counseling sessions also offer insight to other situations that may arise in your marriage, including raising children. Plan a Fusion Ceremony - Consult your officiant(s) and families for advice in designing a ceremony that incorporates both faiths and cultures. Determine which customs are personally significant, and select rituals and readings together. Reassure the Family - As your wedding plans unfold, remember to pause from time to time and check in with your families, especially if the news of an interfaith wedding was an initial shock for either side. How To Handle College Rejection

By Chris Stout Youve spent all this time preparing your application. Youve mailed everything off on time, and your application was complete. You have full confidence in your abilities, and you are ready to move to a new area, a college town that youve single handedly scoped out and explored. All youre waiting for is that large envelope with your acceptance materials. You keep checking the mail, day in and day out, hoping that each new day will be the day that brings the good news. Finally, you receive a reply. The letter looks small. In a very polite and well-written manner, you are told that the school you have chosen appreciates your application, but unfortunately, you have not been accepted. So what are you supposed to do now? Your heart and mind have already made a commitment to this school that doesnt want you. Your spirits are broken and you have no clue how to proceed, but theres hope. College rejection isnt fun, but it also isnt the end of the world. When faced with rejection, your first instinct should be to refuse to give up. Do you think that there must have been a mistake, an oversight of some kind? Was your essay as good as it could have been? Do you genuinely feel that you met (and exceeded) the minimum requirements of the school in question? Are you absolutely sure that you are more than qualified to attend this particular university? Are there extraneous circumstances surrounding your application that you feel need extra clarification? If so, then you need to appeal the decision. Heres a case study to consider: Jim Kelly is a 30 year old applicant who applied to UC Berkeley as a transfer student. After receiving his first rejection letter, Jim was very discouraged, but he did not give up hope. Jim applied again the following year, and his application was once again turned down. He discovered that there where measures he could take to appeal the decision. Jim wrote a letter to the admissions department, and his appeal was reviewed by a committee. Jim made the case for his admission. Dedication, determination and tenacity are qualities that admissions officers love, and Jim highlighted those traits in his appeal letter. After only one appeal (you can appeal multiple times if you like), Jim was in. He didnt let a little thing like two years of rejection thwart his goal of becoming a Berkeley student. If the appeals process doesnt work, thats okay too. You applied to multiple schools, so you still have options. You can always try to transfer to your school of choice after two years. You can also choose to take your general education requirements at a community college. This way you can stay at home, save money, build up your college credits, polish your transcript and transfer to the school that was initially your top choice. Rejection isnt fatal. You can appeal, postpone, reapply or transfer. Dont get discouraged if your top college says no thanks. Flatfeet in Children: When Are They A Problem?

Many individuals have flatfeet, but do not have foot problems. All of us are born with flatfeet and some of the greatest athletes have flatfeet. But, flatfeet are a problem when the arch completely collapses in combination with excess inward rotation in the foot. This type of flatfoot causes excess stress on the joints, ligaments and tendons in the foot and ankle. If not treated appropriately, tendon and joint problems will develop. Flatfeet are normal in infants and the arch will not start to develop until between four and eight years of age. Up until this time, all children will have flatfeet. Many children under the age of 4 may have excessively flatfeet and excess rotation in their feet. How do you tell the difference? The following list may indicate that your toddler’s flatfeet are a problem: 1. Your child is over 15 months of age and has not started walking. 2. Your child started walking around 12 months but seems to prefer crawling. 3. Your child is between the ages of 2-4 and complains of foot pain or leg pain. In many instances, this leg pain is confused with growing pains. 4. The wear on your child’s shoe is uneven. 5. Your child’s arch is touching the ground and the ankles look like they are rolling in, bringing the knees together. For toddlers, the typical treatment is a kiddie orthotic. This is a pre-made orthotic which comes in different sizes. It will fit into any of your child’s shoes and should be comfortable for them. This will help stabilize their foot while they are walking. In severe cases, or in children ages 3 and 4, a custom made orthotic may be necessary. A custom made orthotic is a device that involves taking a mold of the foot, typically done with plaster, but sometimes done with foam. A device is made with specific corrections for your child’s foot and looks like a plastic insert. This insert can slip into the shoe and can be switched from shoe to shoe. Children can wear the same insert for up to 2 shoe sizes, then a new pair must be made. Although the insert will not change the way the foot develops, it will support the foot and allow for a more normal walking pattern. In some cases, children only need the orthotic during the first few years, and after the arch develops, the orthotic is no longer needed. In most cases, children will not “outgrow” their flatfeet. As the arch develops between 4 and 8 years of age, the child’s body goes through numerous changes. The bones grow in length while the leg and thigh bones are rotating. During these years it may be difficult to determine if the flatfeet will become a problem or not. One of best indicators of a problem is pain. Children should not have pain in their feet. They should be able to run around with their friends or in an organized sport without any pain. If your child is having foot, ankle or leg pain, make sure they see a podiatrist. Young children between eight and thirteen years may have flatfeet, but not complain of any pain. This is a common occurrence in this age group, especially if the children are not competitive in any sports. Look for the following: 1. The arch touches the floor and the ankles and feet rotate in. 2. The knees are very close together (knock-knees). 3. Shoes are worn out within 3 months. 4. Wear pattern on the shoe is toward the inside (big toe side). 5. Your child’s gait is bouncy or looks awkward. 6. Your child seems slower than his or her friends or shows a lack of interest in sporting activities despite being athletic. If your child shows any of these signs it is necessary to visit a podiatrist to be evaluated. In many cases, small problems that are developing in this age group can lead to more severe problems down the road. Generalized ankle pain is the most common complaint in children this age with flatfeet. Typically, they will be able to run and play sports, but find that they have a deep, achy pain in and around their ankle when they are done. Children this age have a very difficult time expressing the type of pain they are experiencing and when they experience it. Writing down when the pain happens and where is occurs will help your doctor during the visit. Over fourteen years of age, the growth slows in girls and over the next few years the growth plates in the feet fuse. Boys will have continued growth until 16 to 18 years of age. Children in this age group will typically complain of pain. The most common problem in children with flatfeet in this age group is tendonitis. The pain is either at the back of the heel, or at the inside of the arch. Sometimes the foot and ankle are stiff and sore in the morning, when first stepping down. Walking up and down stairs or hills, squatting or walking on uneven surfaces will cause more pain in these tendons. Treatment of tendonitis involves rest, ice and immobilization for a minimum of two weeks, but two months can be a common recovery time. When these conditions develop as a result of flatfeet, it is necessary to be fit with orthotics to prevent the problem from occurring again. Not every foot needs a custom made orthotic. There are many prefabricated orthotics that work well. A prefabricated orthotic is not the same as an insert. An insert slips into the shoe and will provide comfort, cushion and a little support. In some cases, inserts purchased at the drugstore will help alleviate some arch or heel pain and give relief to sore, tired feet. But, an insert is not an orthotic. Orthotics are devices which fit into the shoe and aid in foot function. The most important difference is an orthotic controls abnormal motion and corrects foot function, while an insert will only provide cushion and comfort. Pre-fabricated orthotics can be found at your local sports store and will help many individuals with flatfeet. They are much cheaper than custom-made orthotics, but they will wear out in 1-2 years. A custom-made orthotic is custom to each foot and corrections are built-in to help the foot function. They are designed to keep stress off the ligaments and tendons in the arch and designed to distribute the pressure evenly while walking. The cover material on the custom-made orthotic may need to be changed every one to two years, but the orthotic itself will last ten years. As expected, custom-made orthotics are much more expensive than prefabricated orthotics or inserts. In summary, all infants have flatfeet, but more severe flatfeet in this group can become a problem. The arch develops between four and eight years of age and predicting long term foot problems in this group can be difficult. Many children, teenagers and adults have flatfeet, yet no foot problems. Therefore, not all flatfeet need to be treated. But, children with foot, ankle or leg pain and flatfeet should be evaluated by a podiatrist. For children with flatfeet and foot pain, custom made orthotics are essential to treatment of the foot problem and for prevention of problems in the future. Gifts That You Would Present To Your Loved One

By Victor Epand Well, let’s see. What if you gave them a gift for a little get-away, such as a long weekend at a cottage somewhere or a short trip? In your situation it would of course have to include the kids. But it could still be something they’d enjoy. Just something different to do that would break the routine. You can also make a special occasion at home by serving him/her a candle light dinner after the kids are in bed. And I suppose you could give him/her something of an upgrade for the technology he/she is using for there video game, such as a bigger TV or a speedier computer. Other than that I can’t really come up with anything. Wait, here is another thought, back when you married him/her they must’ve done more with there life than play a video game all night. How about getting him/her something that would put them in touch with there past and maybe re-kindles there interest in an old hobby? You’ve got to be careful with this one though, they might take it as a sign of disapproval, so you’d have to be very picky in both choosing the gift and the way you present it to them. If he/she wears cologne/perfume then you can get him/her that with a note attached telling them how much you care. Also, you could get him/her a silver chain or watch with the same note. Or a shirt or a gift card to some place. But the part telling them how you feel would be in the card you attach. Which should say something about how much you care about them and how much you have valued knowing them and how you hope that there will be many years where you guys will be a part of each other’s lives? Well let’s see what about giving him/her like some equipment for weight training, like something he/she could do maybe at there house. Also it sounds like you guys have been through a lot together so you could make him/her a journal or photo album. Like doing a journal for your boyfriend/girlfriend. Put pictures of where you went together, make a page for all the obstacles you have crossed together, put songs, or little cute words you say to each other. You can even write an adventure story that included both of you and make up a very good ending (that might be really fun). Another thing you could do is give him/her something simple, but give them many simple things, like maybe a gift certificate to there favorite store and put it in a huge box so it looks like a really big gift. Boxelder Bugs (Maple Bugs) Invade Homes in Fall

By Jack DeAngelis Boxelder bugs, sometimes called maple bugs, are relatively large insects, about 1/2 long, dark gray in color with red markings on their backs. The bugs are harmless. What makes them remarkable is their tendency to congregate on certain houses in the fall of the year, often in enormous numbers. It truly seems like an invasion — especially the first time it happens. Here’s what’s going on. Boxelder bugs (see a color image at www.LivingWithBugs.com/boxelder.html) have one generation a year. Eggs are laid in early summer on maple trees (boxelder is a type of maple).Eggs hatch and the young nymphs feed on maple tree leaves during the summer. They do no apparent harm to the trees. The insects reach adulthood in fall and can fly. Adults abandon the trees on which they developed in search of a place to overwinter. Many insects overwinter. It is not really a state of hibernation, or diapause, but rather simply an inactive stage brought on by low temperature. Once warmed the insects resume activity. Insects seek protected places in which to overwinter. Fall migrating boxelder bugs are attracted to large trees with dense, evergreen foliage like cedars. Trees with deeply fissured bark also are selected. Both must appear to be good overwintering sites. A single large tree might attract hundreds, or thousands, of boxelder bugs from the surrounding area. These bugs are strong fliers so may travel miles from the maple tree on which they developed. We now have a large tree with perhaps thousands of overwintering boxelder bugs — so far so good. Let’s put this tree, full of bugs, near the sunny, southwest side of a house. When the house siding heats up during the day all of a sudden the nice warm house seems like a better place to overwinter than the tree. Presto, the bugs move en mass to the house. Imagine, a thousand, or more (seems like millions!), 1/2 bugs congregating on the outside of your house, around doors, windows and on siding. This actually happens to many people each fall, year after year. What to do. First realize that these bugs are harmless. They don’t bite or sting, won’t hurt your house nor will they set up permanent residence. But even people who know all this freak out when confronted with all these bugs. Here are some suggestions. The most important thing is to prevent the bugs from getting indoors. If they do gain entry they will likely be around until spring. Repair window screens, caulk cracks around window and door frames and screen soffit vents. Next, wash down aggregating masses of bugs with water spray from a garden hose then clean the siding with soapy water from a hose-end sprayer. A weak solution of laundry detergent is fine for this application. There is some evidence that washing the siding helps to discourage other bugs from congregating. Don’t use insecticidal sprays. Insecticides don’t work well on these semi-dormant insects and can be messy and dangerous. You may need to repeat this procedure every few days until the number of new bugs starts to drop. On occasion large numbers of bugs will get into the attic or exterior wall voids of a house. Again, these insects cause no real harm but may be a nuisance. They will find a way into the home’s interior on warm winter days — probably the day of your dinner party. In this case it may be necessary to treat the attic and walls with insecticidal dust. Bugs found crawling around indoors should be removed with a vacuum cleaner. Don’t reach for the can of insecticide! You may have concluded that the solution to this invasion problem is to remove the big tree. Sometimes this works but sometimes it does not. Sometimes the big tree is in your neighbor’s yard. What Cows Know About Weight Loss That We Have Forgotten

By Michael Callen I want to talk to you about cows and what they can teach us about weight loss, or more specifically, fat loss. While it may not be obvious, we can learn a very important lesson from cows. Not so many years ago, cattle were herded across the central plains. North in the summer and south in the winter, following the good weather. While moving several thousand head of cattle on horseback, it was impossible to bring food for the animals, so the route taken had to include grasslands or prairies where the cattle could graze. With the advent of cattle ranches and barbed wire, it became increasingly more difficult to run cattle across the open range. Instead of moving the cattle to the food, ranchers began to bring the food to the cattle. With a change in diet came a change in the meat and dairy products as well. You know the old saying “you are what you eat”… well, the same is true for cattle. Cows that consume a diet of fresh grasses instead of dry cattle “feed” end up consuming a higher concentration of many nutrients as well. One in particular that I’d like to discuss with you is a fatty acid called conjugated linoleic acid, or CLA. Throughout time, people who ate beef and drank milk from cows that were “range fed” ended up consuming a healthy amount of CLA. Since then, the amount of CLA that cattle consume has decreased dramatically, and so they are passing less along to those of us further down the food-chain. So, what does that mean for us? Well, once upon a time, people were able to make meat and dairy a part of a healthy diet, and that beef and milk actually helped them to stay lean. The actual way in which CLA keeps animals (like us) lean is still somewhat of a mystery, but through observation, scientists are able to see that it works… and it works very well. A double blind study of obese humans in Norway showed that after 12 weeks, the group that took a little over 3 grams of CLA per day had a statistically significant decrease in body fat mass (BFM) and a statistically significant increase in lean body mass (LBM). These results were acheived without a significant lifestyle change. Now I’m not going to suggest that anyone tries to lose weight without making significant lifestyle changes. Changes should include (but not be limited to) a decrease in calories per day and an increase in exercise per week. If people can get significant results without making a lifestyle change, what can they do when the two are working together? I’ve been hearing about CLA for years now from friends who have lost pounds, fat and inches, and I’ve begun to take it myself as well, finally. I’m walking thirty minutes a day, five days per week, reducing my caloric intake, and taking CLA three times per day. I’m looking forward to updating you on my progress, and I hope you’ll join me as well. Before you decide, let’s look at what we know about CLA and its effects. Studies show that CLA reduces body fat and weight in four ways: * By decreasing the amount of fat that is stored after eating * By increasing the rate of fat breakdown in fat cells * By increasing the rate of fat metabolism * By decreasing the number of fat cells In addition to decreasing fat, CLA also helps to increase lean muscle mass. This helps in two ways, first of all, muscle looks better and more natural than fat, and secondly lean muscle burns calories. Are You A Procrastinator? Do Not Let It Hurt Your Career

By Carl Mueller In a work sense, being a procrastinator means you delay or postpone work and put off things you could do today until a later time. Often we procrastinate because we feel lazy or because we just dont feel like doing something. Certainly these feelings can arise from time to time especially if it involves a task we dont want to do. If you tend to put things off as long as possible before finally doing it and if you like to look for excuses to avoid completing certain tasks, you might very well be a procrastinator. Procrastination can really stunt your career growth and can even derail it in extreme cases. People generally dont like working with procrastinators especially during team projects so getting a reputation as a procrastinator can be a big mark against you. Here are some ways to avoid procrastination and in the process, avoid losing face with your colleagues and peers: 1. Dont put off until tomorrow what you can finish today. Finish the easiest tasks or the ones you dislike the most, first. Getting a few tasks out of the way will at least help you see your accomplishments and perhaps increase your motivation to get the others done. By doing the tasks that you hate the most first, you get rid of the whole reason you were procrastinating in the first place. 2. Develop better work habits. Procrastination tends to be a habit that you feel comfortable doing, especially if you manage to get away with it time after time. Pulling all-nighters and completing work at the last minute that could have been finished the previous week seems to be a badge of honor for some people. Develop new work habits by planning ahead and starting work early rather than waiting until the last minute. Next time you think about pulling an all-nighter and doing everything at the last minute, remember how much you hated the last all-nighter you pulled. 3. Set deadlines and stick to them. Otherwise, ask others for help. Sometimes, we procrastinate when we are unsure what to do. I tend to do this myself. Paralysis by analysis they call it, where you are unable to act because you keep thinking about how to act. Set a timeline for making your decision and stick to the timeline. Ask others (ie. your colleagues) for help if youre really stuck making a decision. 4. Get rid of distractions. Procrastination can be made worse when we have things like the coffee room, the Internet, chatty colleagues and other distractions for us to deal with. Close your office door and dont allow yourself to be distracted. Lock yourself in a meeting room if you need to be alone. 5. Try giving yourself rewards for completing tasks you hate the most. It might sound silly but sometimes giving yourself a small reward for avoiding procrastinating can help you. The next time you feel like procrastinating, dont. The way to break the habit of procrastination is to complete tasks as you receive them rather than putting them on the backburner to do later.
